This book has to deliver on that promise in order for it to do the job it is supposed to do. Within that, each chapter has a promise of change. For example, by the end of the chapter you are reading here I want you to recognize and be able to do solid-state writing. Within the chapter each section has a smaller promise of change, to help you move from here to there, toward the promise for the chapter and for the whole book.
This holds true for any piece of writing: a magazine article, a podcast script, a screenplay, a novel, an online course curriculum, even a poem that makes the reader notice something, or think about something in a different way.
It can be counterproductive to formulate this promise of change too early, or to cling on to it too tightly, but when we come to finalize a piece, identifying it and delivering on it are essential.
To view your piece through the lens of utility, ask these questions:
What is your promise of change and does your piece deliver on it?
When you have finished reading, how would you summarize what you have just read? Does that fit your intention?
Of all the things you have read on the topic you are writing about, what is special about your take on it?
